April 10: Inspired By...

My adorable friend H arrived at Bible Study one week wearing a chambray top over a loose flouncy skirt and paired with boots. I gushed over the cuteness sharing that I have some spaghetti strap dresses I'd love to make work appropriate in a similar way. She encouraged me to try it and I finally did! One of my coworkers thought it was a skirt which makes perfect sense and I loved that I'm getting more wear out of this lightweight dress since I am more frequently in workout clothes on weekends than a fun springy dress.

April 9: Nautical

I wasn't supposed to buy anything this month as I waited for Lilly and Milly but when I had some free time with my sister, we ended up at H&M and they had this adorable nautical top for a bargain price. I *had* to have it! I knew it would be cool with my white jeans as shown here and white pencil skirt but I think it will go with other blue and red bottoms as well. The only problem is that I feel like it should be worn with boot shoes, a style I've never favored and thus do not possess. I will need to experiment to see if any other shoes would fit the look.

April 2: Stripes with Colors

I'm a bit behind on my posts but I'm trying to catch up by posting this older post. I really liked the vivid colors featured here with bright pink and bright blue paired with a simple grey striped top as a neutral contrast. Though I fall back on black and white a lot, I do like incorporating colors into my workweek outfits and I think this one was a great success.

March 31: The End of the Quarter

I find great significance in arbitrary time periods; in this case, I am reflecting on the end of the first quarter of the year. It marks the wrap-up of a big project for me at work and the beginning of a new one led this time by one of my coworkers rather than me. I have several accomplishments I need to chart for my end of the year review and several smaller projects I want to tackle personally. I reflect on the fact that I am still marvelously on track with reading the Bible in a year thanks to She Reads Truth. I've finished three boot camp challenges and feel strong enough to handle whatever else they throw at me. I think about the new relationships I'm nurturing and the one area where I feel weak and powerless and if there's any way I can improve that.

I also think about the exciting things to come in the next quarter: Maroon 5 concert, Lilly for Target, a road trip with my sister, and my friend's wedding. I look forward to seeing what's ahead!

This top was another fun surprise from my mom due to her serious Kohl's addiction. I initially paired it just with the skirt (and I think it will look great with most of my other skirts) but then I wanted to add some color. Even though I tend to see mustard associated with fall, I'm not ready to put away this cardigan so expect to see it some more even in the next few months.

I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for the next capsule collection for Target especially once I found out that it would be Lilly Pulitzer. The original designer is actually one of my top five style icons because I love her bright peppy dresses. Obviously I knew my eye would be on the dresses when the lookbook dropped but I wasn't sure what else I'd want. Alas my original list is a whopping seven items long. Happily I budgeted in the first quarter to support this investment April 19 so I think I'm prepared for the hit to my wallet.

Anyway a story to demonstrate my excitement. My coworker K has been similarly looking forward to Lilly as she does all the Target capsules (kind of a bonding thing for us). On Wednesday, we had been discussing when the lookbook might arrive, displeased that it had not already. On Thursday, I opened my email to discover that it had! I almost called her just to say "The lookbook has dropped. This is not a drill" but I refrained since it was lunch time and she'd be in the kitchen soon enough. We fumbled with our phones to see all the pieces available and then later took some time to compile our lists. Again after careful consideration I have seven pieces, each representing a different print because I like them so much.

Clothes first of course :)

Other just because of those glorious prints!

There were not nearly enough clothing items in Wavepool.

What do you think? What's on your must-have list?

March 30: More black and white

I swear I really do love color! But when it comes to creating outfits, it seems that more often than not, I fall back on the simple black and white. Do I get any bonus points for the fact that technically my blouse is cream, its lace, or the skirt's pattern? I'm afraid I have more black and white in store for the week but also a few pieces with color to help redeem my reputation :)

March 26: Midi skirt madness

One piece I really wanted in my wardrobe last year was a mint midi skirt. Of course I didn't want to pay too much since I wasn't sure if it was an investment piece or not. Happily my mom and sister came through for me while shopping at Charlotte Russe and brought home this beauty for me. I've had it for about a year and it is something I usually bust out at least once a month-a great investment! I love how the mint seems to go with everything and I look forward to making new outfits up with it.

March 25: Mint professional

Another desire to dress up for work incorporated this new top from my mom. She loved the color combination of mint, black, and white, which I think will go with any of my white or black bottoms, making this a very versatile addition to my wardrobe. It's a nice thing when your mom "gets" your style, you know?

March 24: My favorite dress goes to work

I'm not actually sure this is my FAVORITE dress but it's pretty high up there and it has mostly been a staple of my weekend wear for some reason. I finally got it on the schedule to go to work where it performed admirably. It's so lovely and classic (plus it was a total score since I grabbed it from Target's clearance rack!) I do feel like I need to wear a belt to give it a bit of shape but that's easily remedied :)

March 23: I do own pants!

I can understand why people might think I only have skirts and dresses as that is what I predominantly feature on this blog but I actually do own pants. Now that spring has officially sprung, I'm excited to cook up some more outfits with my white jeans. They look so crisp and are a real change from my typical outfit.

March 20: Happy Spring!

March 20 is the calendar start of spring but honestly it has felt like that for a while here in good old southern California (or rather it has felt like we skipped spring and started summer very early.) To celebrate, I wanted a pretty colorful dress paired with open-toed sandals that fully embrace the season. Though I initially worried this dress was too short, I did not feel that way as I wore it to work (thankfully). Happy spring everyone!

March 19: Brighter than Bright

I'm pretty sure I featured almost this exact outfit on my blog earlier though I don't feel like digging through the archives to look for it. Anyway I did make a few changes, switching to a crew neck rather than v-neck and sporting my favorite shoes from Target. I have them in four colors/patterns and I may totally be planning to scoop up every other color I can find. They just seem to fit my feet so well that I can't resist.

March 18: Professional

I had a presentation to give at work today and though it wasn't formal, I did dress up a little bit with my pretty top, pencil skirt, and wedges for confidence (that's how I always think when adding height to my ensemble.) It went well and I'm looking forward to the next part at the beginning of April.

So Good to Me

Blog Updates: I finished my Five Parts story but my friend didn't really like the ending. I imagine most people who know me in real life would find it surprising as I'm definitely someone who prefers stories with a happily ever after. Yet as this story unfolded, the happy ending did not materialize. So I have an epilogue in mind to make it more optimistic.

I also have two more story ideas: one that is kind of inspired by my current emotional state and another that is probably going to be more religiously themed. The latter is not hashed out at all but I hope to have the first of five parts (yes again) for the former up this month-we'll see what time I have.

There are also still more outfits to come-I post my outfits on the day I wear them if I feel inspired so that's why you haven't seen one yet this week. There may be one to come but I'm not sure how excited I am about this week's outfits-I mean I like wearing them but I don't know if I want to go through the process of making a post around any of them.

In the meantime, I wanted to share a song that has been of great comfort to me lately. We have been singing it at my young adults group at church including special dance moves and I find it greatly inspiring. I hope you will enjoy it if you take a listen :)

Mega Post: Stitch Fix Experience

I've been teasing my first Stitch Fix tryout for a while now but I've finally had time to sit down and write it all up for you. I'm so excited to share now! I have seen Stitch Fix around on a lot of blogs and found the concept intriguing though I wasn't sure it was for me. I have mostly followed a no new clothes resolution in the first quarter and I feel very confident about my ability to pick out clothes I like. But I kept feeling tempted so I broke down and signed up to give it a go.

Upon creating a profile online, I was asked a bunch of questions. I gave my sizing info and described generally my style and lifestyle (most of my clothes need to bridge a business casual and a very casual environment plus I need cool clothes to accommodate this dang heat.) I also had the option to write additional comments-this was a bit of a disappointment to me as it was not an unlimited space and I had to truncate my words.

Before it arrived, I discussed it with my friend K saying that I would only keep pieces that fit perfectly (both my body and my general vision for my wardrobe) and it had to be something that mad me happy (like my hot pink Kate Spade bag and new Joe Fresh lightweight trench coat do.) Finally this past Wednesday, my box arrived (beautifully packaged) so I opened it up to see what I got. I had secretly been hoping for three tops, one dress, and one skirt. I got two dresses, two tops, and a pair of jeans. So let's see how the stylist did.
This is a cool textured print dress. I love patterns and colors so I specifically requested that in my box and my stylist obliged. Ultimately the neckline felt a little low on me. If you look at my outfits, I think you might observe that I tend to be most conservative there so while I basically liked the dress, it didn't quite pass muster.
I love striped dresses (I believe my instagram shows my favorite Target dress several times...) and this one is so lightweight. I love that it has sleeves and it is navy, not black in case you couldn't tell from my photos. The neckline is also more appropriate for my taste. But still I couldn't quite bring myself to pull the trigger on making a purchase.
This is a gorgeous shade of blue (probably one of my favorites because I think it's incredibly flattering.) It's lightweight and would work with pants or tucked into my beloved pencil skirts. Unfortunately the neckline made me a bit uncomfortable and I'm sure I would have been anxious wearing it to work because alas that is my personality.
As in the previous picture, I am wearing the jeans they sent. I happened to look at the invoice before trying anything on and I saw that these jeans were $128 (originally $148 less $20 styling fee but then also plus tax). So there was basically zero chance of me buying them. I could buy three other pairs of jeans for that same amount! They fit fine but they weren't anything special in my opinion.
In a surprise to me, this orange and navy striped top was my favorite piece from the box. It was incredibly comfortable, fit beautifully, and made me feel very confident. Ultimately though the price was too much of a factor for me. As I want to build a wardrobe of quality over quantity, I have to be pretty discriminating.

My mom also happened to go to Kohl's that same day and pick me up some pieces, which she really isn't supposed to do. The question is: did she do a better job of styling me than Stitch Fix?
First was this dress with attached belt. My initial inclination was that it seemed a bit short although it was pointed out that I've worn other dresses of similar length and I can always add tights. I also think my hair looks pretty interesting here so I'm glad to be including this picture. I think this dress is cool because of all the different colors in it. I plan to wear this dress this coming week.
Lastly was this skirt, which I paired with my black Everlane tee for a winning combination. The skirt was by far my favorite piece that I tried on and I ended up wearing it last Friday with black flats.

In conclusion: I think Stitch Fix is a lot of fun and a great experience. I definitely intend to try it again this summer when my budget opens up more. But in the end, I still think my mom did a better job of styling me :)

Stitch Fix Tease!

Last week I mentioned that I had a Stitch Fix shipment on its way! Well it arrived on Wednesday and I tried everything on, taking pictures along the way. I'm still writing up the post but I can share a little tease below for those who don't follow my Instagram. I got two dresses, two shirts, and a pair of jeans. I look forward to sharing all about it with you!

March 12: No Red Lipstick!

Shocker: today I decided to NOT wear my beloved red lipstick. I felt okay about this decision throughout the day but when I looked at this picture, it just looked so bland to me. Also in a change, I wore pearls in a headband through my hair rather than as a necklace around my neck. So in general this is just kind of weird styling for me. Maybe I should have stuck with my favorite red lipstick and pearl necklace. Still I love the mix of coral and mint going on here as that is one of my favorite combinations.

March 11: Sleepy

I was a bit sleepy today so I'm glad I wore something really easy and comfortable. The top is a fitted boyfriend style from Gap and I love rolling up the sleeves and being very relaxed in it. I think it would look great with jeans too but I always seem to end up in a skirt. I also did a bit of pattern mixing by adding my new floral flats from Target to the mix-how creative of me :)

March 10: I'm so fancy

Sometimes I just feel like being a little dressy so I pulled out this old standby. Unfortunately it's become a bit loose in some areas due to my consistent workouts and it's starting to show its age. This is disappointing but does allow me to start thinking about a new dress to replace it :) It's always good to have a professional not quite black dress.

March 9: Daylight Savings Time

I talked to many people who were affected by the time change but I actually felt pretty great. It was kind of funny yesterday when church was only about half-full (I go to the first service where worship starts at 8:45 and I don't think that's early at all.) It probably helped that I went to bed around 9:30 on both Saturday and Sunday nights plus took long naps on both days. At the least it didn't hurt!

I really like the idea of this outfit but I'm not entirely sure the blazer served me as well as it could have. Perhaps I need to pair the blouse and skirt with a more fitted blazer to get the look I want. At least there is the bright pop of red to add interest to an otherwise pretty plain outfit.

Part V: "In the name of being honest"

He comes over to her place.

She is so happy even just sitting with him in comfortable, never awkward silence. They have next weekend planned and maybe they can start to talk about next month too.

After an hour, he's holding her. He says they can't do this anymore.

She pauses, unsure of what he means.

He prompts her, "You're a smart girl; you can figure this out."

She gapes at him. He is still holding her.

He continues saying he can't be in a relationship right now.

She is taken aback, unable to think, barely able to breathe.

He visits her bathroom.

She escorts him to the door.

She locks the door behind him.

She cries.

She cries for her broken heart
her shattered hopes and dreams
their lost friendship.

She cries for a year.

March 6: Boyfriend

No I'm not announcing that I have a boyfriend; rather I am showing off my new boyfriend jeans from Old Navy. I have been loving their commercials and they have just been killing it will styles so when my sister was here last week, she dragged us all out to Old Navy. And the three of us ended up getting their new boyfriend jeans (well I bought mine in store but had to order online for the other two since their preferred size and wash was not in stock.) Coincidentally that Old Navy is near a Target so we swung by there and I picked up some floral flats. This outfit was immediately complimented by my coworker and I felt awesome all day in it!

March 5: Floral

This outfit is a bit of a disappointment to me as I imagined it in my head as something very cute and it looked good on the hanger together but I'm just not in love with it. This makes me nervous for tomorrow's outfit which also looks super cute in my head.

On the bright side, I had to give a presentation at work today and it went really well. At first I felt very prepared but as the time approached, I became more anxious. Then it happened and I was calm again. In hindsight, it all seems rather humorous.

March 4: Statement Necklace

It has been surprisingly chilly in the morning and with rain on the previous days, I decided to go with pants but I think I brightened them up sufficiently with my cardigan and necklace. I was supremely comfortable all day which is very important in an outfit and I think I looked pretty good too. The shirt I'm wearing is actually a men's shirt from Target, a section my sister loves to raid and has convinced me on occasion to visit as well.

March 3: Professional

Today we had an all-hands meeting so I wanted to dress up a bit (never mind that my cubicle is right outside the office of the bigwig so he sees me all the time and never mind that in general I'm on the dressy and trendy side.) I also really should have worn heels but my legs were sore from a workout yesterday so flats it was!

In exciting news, I requested my first Stitch Fix! My coworker is really looking forward to how it turns out and I will of course be completing a full write up. My shipment is due next Wednesday but in the meantime I'm disappointed with their encouragement to provide as much detail as possible and yet the character limits stopped me short. We'll see how well the styling goes!

March 2: Rainy Day

It started raining Saturday night and we ended up getting over an inch that was desperately needed. Sometimes I respond to rain with something bright and cheerful...and sometimes I wear darks and bundle up. Guess which happened today? Crazily February can be a very long month for me and I'm still not quite recovered so I hope that helps make this explicable.

Part IV: "I don't know how it gets better than this"

What a crazy day it has been! She woke up early so she could work 7.5 hours with a break in the middle for her friend's baby shower and now it's pouring rain, scotching her plans to wear her new little black dress AND he has all of a sudden texted asking if he could come over early. She hurriedly grabs a plaid shirt and jeans, figuring at least she'll be comfortable even if she doesn't get to dress up. When she steps outside to greet him, he wraps his arms around her and squeezes her so tight. It momentarily catches her off guard before she relaxes into his warmth.

On the drive to the restaurant, he again surprises her by talking about how he wants kids after she describes the baby shower. He will be a fun dad, he pronounces while she knows she'll be the responsible person who tries to schedule and turn everything into a routine-it would be very complementary. He also mentions her helping him look for a new apartment when his lease is finally up in the summer. These topics seem somewhat serious to her but if he wants to lead the way, she'll gladly follow him.

Throughout dinner, she keeps staring at him but then blushing when he returns the stare. He needs to look elsewhere and let her gaze in peace, she thinks! But they also keep talking about everything under the sun it seems. She has worried about their ability to converse (what doesn't she worry about?) but that was unnecessary it seems as the conversation freely rolls along.

Afterward they wander through some shops enjoying the fact that it is no longer raining and that they are together. They keep talking and talking and talking as it gets later and later and later.

She begins to flag from her busy day and he has to return her home but not before he kisses and kisses and kisses her. She tries to pull away knowing he has a drive home but she doesn't want to go just yet. Finally she does pull away already waiting for the next time they'll see each other.

February 24: Elbow Patch Tuesday

As I joked on Instagram, Elbow Patch Tuesday is not a thing, which is good as I only have two sweaters with them but oh how I love them both! Today I wore this cool sweater that is cream in front and mint in back with camel elbow patches that match my skirt well as was noticed by my boss. Additionally two coworkers commented on how cute my shoes are. Unfortunately I ended up doing a lot of standing and walking today and they were not very practical for that purpose-my ankle hurt by the end of the day. This means that I will be in flats tomorrow and likely for the rest of the week to give my feet a rest.

Part III: "Are we out of the woods yet?"

It's been a roller coaster of a few weeks: does he want to be with her? Sometimes he seems so present and sometimes he seems to need his space. She waits, she tries to give him the space, to go with him instead of rushing ahead and waiting for him to catch up.

That night he texts her to commiserate but it soon segues into flirting with her:
  • "little miss plan everything"
  • "you definitely put together some cute outfits"
  • your valentine was very clever
But then he pulls back and he asks her about their future and she tries not to overwhelm her with her words for they are voluminous and optimistic. They seem to appease him as he responds with: "...I do want you and that's what I'm going to try and do."

As the conversation ends, he makes her night with the heartwarming, "I've really been unable to stop thinking about your for the last week, to be honest."

The real clincher though is "I'm excited about the future for us."

Finally she feels confident to place some hopes on him, on them. He is in it and they can possibly plan to her heart's content and be the amazing couple she's envisioned.

February 23: Green Monday

I feel like this outfit is a bit out there for me. It was inspired by something I read online suggesting wearing booties with a maxi skirt. Of course I adore my booties as you will have noticed from my posts and I've been flipping past this skirt for a few weeks feeling guilty that I wasn't wearing it. But that article inspired me to pair them together. I didn't know what top to wear so I figured this would work. As I stomped around work, I felt like one of my coworkers who is much taller than me and carries herself so confidently.

Oscars Countdown!

One of my personal goals has been to watch every Best Picture winner (if you look below, you can see the complete list with ones I've seen bolded.) I don't think that winning that prize actually means it's the best film of the year-there is so much politicking behind the scenes but then I do sometimes think the Academy gets it right (huge soft spot for Gigi to be honest). Which ones do I need to make it a priority to see?

As part of my preparations, I've been watching TCM's Oscars month and have recorded four to add to my list, two of which I've watched already. On my DVR is "Marty" and "Gentleman's Agreement."  But the two I just saw were "Cimarron" and "Patton."

For me, Cimarron is a "how did this win?" film. I found it terribly boring though please note that I don't tend to like westerns or Irene Dunne much. It actually reminded me of the (superior) "Cavalcade" as it follows a family through growing pains. My favorite part was the portrait of Theodore Roosevelt that flashed when Oklahoma became a state.

Patton was actually pretty decent though, like most war films, short on female characters to my dismay. My favorite part of it was his beginning speech with the immortal line, "No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." My grandfather actually fought in Patton's army and hated him; the film shows very clearly why that would be the case.

As for tonight, the race for the big one seems to be between "Boyhood" and "Birdman." I haven't seen either (I did see "Selma," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," and "The Imitation Game") but I'm personally rooting for the latter because I'd rather watch it. Right now, I'm enjoying the red carpet though I want to see more dresses! It seems like all the guys have arrived but the ladies are making us wait. Happy viewing!

February 19: Pink and Poppy

I decided to pose a little differently for this picture, just because :) I also feel like my hair looks exceptionally long in this picture-maybe the angle? Anyway this dress actually looks a bit weird on me but the blazer helps cover that up. I think the tights and booties were a good decision too. It's a bit of a change-up from my usual look I feel and yet it is also in line with my general style (and very comfortable of course.)

February 18: Preppy

I am rapidly becoming obsessed with my camel pencil skirt, a requested Christmas present, and I'm having fun creating outfits for it. On a whim, I decided to pair it with a red blouse and navy blazer for a look that turned out kind of preppy in my opinion. I've had this blazer for a while but I hadn't been wearing any blazers really. I'm glad I pulled this out because I'm falling back in love with it-expect to see it around more especially if our weather stays "chilly"! (Note: chilly is in the 60s for me.)

February 13: Anti-Valentine's Day

So my group at work is small (four of us plus our boss) and we've been getting close. Thus when the sole guy in the group declared that he did not want to celebrate Valentine's Day referencing a heartbreak, we went with it, starting with a decision to wear black and escalating to formal black and a commitment to make breakfast. I did cheat a bit, wearing a pink cardigan (not pictured) and a pink heart necklace (hard to see) but I mostly committed and we had a fun breakfast together with animal shaped waffles! What a great team :)

February 11: Pink II

As I said, I wore pink on Monday but I just didn't get a picture of it; that is why I consider today part II. This is such a fun dress-the top and skirt are different textures which felt a little weird to me but ultimately is something I really like about it. Plus we were blessed with such a warm day today (not trying to make you jealous but I think it hit 80) and this is a great lightweight outfit.

February 10: Red I

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to snap a picture of yesterday's outfit but I can tell you it was pink as part of the leadup to Valentine's Day. Today is a counterpoint in red. It's an incredibly simple dress but it garnered two compliments on how good I looked and that red is my color. I must say-that is always a good feeling! Then my new coworker (she's worked there about six weeks) mentioned that she doesn't think she's ever seen me in the same outfit. So I have a lot of clothes and I like to put together nice outfits-that sounds like me :)

Part II: "I was riding shotgun"

For some reason, he has not secured a second date with her. So she takes it upon herself to ask when he will be picking her up that night. Thankfully he responds and arrives accordingly.

As he drives, for some reason, the conversation turns toward brewing beer. Now she does not like beer and has never spent time pondering anything about it but his knowledge and passion is infectious. She must remind herself that he is driving on the freeway at night and it would not be safe to kiss him.

Their dining location is new to her but filled with delicious goodies. She loves listening to him talk and thus their dinner date is filled with that as he paints a picture of his family, his history, his frustrations, possibilities for his future. She even gets him to split dessert with her because she always wants chocolate and she enjoys the intimacy of a shared dish.

On the way back, the talk turns serious with her sharing her deepest darkest secret that she's never told anyone before. How can she feel so comfortable so fast with him? But he simply accepts her as she is (and was).

Once parked in front of her house, he continues to talk and talk and talk until she has to interrupt him: "Are you going to kiss me or not?" Happily he obliges and sends her dancing back to her house to dream of him.

January 30: She Blinds Me

The post title was inspired by my (male) coworker who was talking about how he was blinded. I thought he meant because we had new lighting installed and all of us had agreed that it was much brighter than we were used to but nope he meant my blazer. I thought that was such a funny comment and of course I was totally oblivious! The weird thing about this outfit is that I wore it on Friday, which one would imagine to be very casual and yet I really wanted to wear this pencil skirt so that's what I wore!

January 29: As Seen on Pinterest

One blog I love following is Audrey at Putting Me Together. To encourage herself (and her followers), she's been creating weekly style challenges. This week's was to copy an outfit from Pinterest. I kind of tried this outfit last week with a different striped blouse and blue skirt but I think I like this version more with my beloved mint midi skirt. I didn't really have a good necklace but I am wearing a very delicate gold "S" necklace that you just can't see. I also would have liked to wear this with strappy sandals but the weather was a bit chillier than expected so that didn't work out. Overall I am pleased with how this came out!

Body Image-Thunder Thighs

I distinctly remember being a teenager and being struck by a Nike ad where a woman talked about her strong thighs and being a grandmother and bouncing a child on those thighs. It struck me because it was so counter to many messages I've seen of women hating their bodies and I wished I had ripped it out to save. Cut to last week when one of my friends posted the below; my memory of the ad was that it actually featured a black and white photograph of a woman but the text is the most important part.
Writings like this continue to matter to me in my day to day thinking about my body. I am striving for strength and health in my body regardless of it matches the weird media created images I can imagine. I was reminded again of this during my two (!) workouts today, a thirty minute boot camp and a sixty minute barre class, where we were constantly reminded to maintain good posture and to reach with strength and purpose. This reminds me to think of all that my body can do (for example, I am on track to complete 1,000 burpees this month) and to praise it and reward it with more challenging workouts and delicious food instead of poking at what I perceive to be its flaws. I hope you find the same message inspiring :)

Part I: "blushing all the way home"

He texts that he's running a little late. This does not help her nervousness, instead increasing her pacing in the front hall. Is this a date or is this just friends seeing a movie together? Sure it was planned in advance but they're both so busy that it's also kind of necessary. And yes he's picking her up but he likes to be in control and protect people so how can she be certain that it means anything special to him?

Finally he arrives and knocks on the door. He's shaved after a month growing a beard and he's wearing blue that brings out his eyes and he's got that cologne that makes her knees weak.

He opens the car door for her, which seems to suggest that it's a date. But they chat about totally benign topics on the way to the film. He also pays for the movie tickets and buys her popcorn in addition to his soda. This has her inclined toward date.

After she finishes her popcorn, she awkwardly rests her hand on the armrest hoping he'll grab it. Or maybe she can will him to put his arm around her. No dice and the fact that he wants to take her back home after instead of maybe grabbing a drink makes her think it wasn't a date after all. It really is just two friends hanging out.

When he pulls up in front of her house, he turns off the engine but doesn't move to get out so she waits. He breaks the silence and says he likes her and that he finds her interesting (!)

He asks if he can kiss her.

Though later her friends will evince a preference for a guy to "take charge and be a man," she is gratified by his question. She reads so much into it wondering first why no other guy ever asked if he could kiss her. She thinks him to be a feminist; though some dating advice might suggest that she owed him at least a kiss for taking her out, driving, and paying, he respects her jurisdiction over her body and checks in about her wishes. And she sees him taking this potential change in their friendship seriously because they can't ever go back now.

She says "yes" in the easiest decision of her life.

When he walks her to her door, there are frequent stops as she simply must hug him more and also she really never wants the night to end.

As he drives home, she texts him thanks and wonders what will happen next.

January 21: I Wish It Was As Simple as Black and White

I originally intended just to wear my polka dot button down blouse tucked into my white pencil skirt. But after yesterday's chill, I decided to add another layer and it worked out just perfect! The blouse is so lightwight that I didn't get hot as the day warmed up and I think the black sweater added a layer of polish. This opinion was bolstered by the two compliments I received-always a sweet surprise :)

January 20: Pattern Mixing

I don't really know about this outfit. I have wanted to be bolder about mixing patterns after I see women killing it on their blogs all the time. It seems sensible that black and white will go well together. I adore this skirt, which has been quite versatile considering its distinctive print. And of course my favorite pattern is polka dots. But all together, does it work? And I just don't know. Further staring suggests the elastic bottom of the top is doing something weird to my waist-would I like it more if it was tucked in? I had big hopes for this outfit but they fell a bit flat; similarly I had high hopes for another gorgeous sunny day and got a weirdly cold and foggy day. Better luck tomorrow!

January 15: Ladylike 60s

I had the great good fortune to see the film "Selma" last week. It is horrifyingly intense and a fascinating tribute to a complicated figure and an examination of a difficult part of our culture. There's a lot I'm still thinking about especially in light of the Academy's failure to nominate its lead actor or director. However, as someone who blogs about her outfit of the day, I was also very interested in the clothing. The 1950s and 1960s are some of my favorite decades for coveting clothing and this outfit is inspired by something that Coretta Scott King wore during the film. I adore this blouse so much-one of my favorite things is blouses with ties in the front. This one is a bit droopy after a long day at the office.
